Michelle Kaufmann Designs

Michelle Kaufmann founded her Oakland-based architectural office in 2002. Michelle Kaufmann Designs (MKD) focuses on modern, ecological building designs for residential and commercial clients that utilize off-site modular technologies. In 2004 she realized the Glidehouse for Sunset Magazine, an affordable, modern, prefabricated home whose success led to the development of her second house, the Sunset Breezehouse (2005). In addition to these projects, MKD has created custom designs for educational facilities, community developments, and hotels and spas. Kaufmann received her master of architecture degree from Princeton University and her bachelor’s degree in architecture from Iowa State University. Prior to founding MKD, she was an associate for Frank O. Gehry in Los Angeles.
